Mountain biking has a way of getting under your skin – the crunch of tyres on dusty trails, the adrenaline of a technical descent, and the pure, heart-thumping joy of a finish line. But if there’s one race that embodies all of this with a side of breathtaking Karoo scenery and world-class hospitality, it’s the Tankwa Trek.
For those who haven’t yet had the privilege (or, let’s be honest, the courage) to take on this beast, the Tankwa Trek isn’t just another stage race. It’s a three-day test of grit, skill, and endurance through one of the most beautifully rugged landscapes South Africa has to offer. And the best part? It’s a race that welcomes everyone – from weekend warriors to the world's best pros.
Racing Among the Best
If you’ve ever dreamt of lining up next to some of the fastest women on two wheels, this is your chance. The Tankwa Trek attracts elite women’s teams from around the globe, giving us mere mortals an up-close look at how they tackle technical terrain, blitz the climbs, and leave everything out on the course. This race serves as an early-season form-check for teams gearing up for the big-stage races later in the year, like the Cape Epic. So, expect fireworks from the pros and take notes – there’s always something to learn from watching the best in action.
The Course: Stunning, Brutal, and Oh-So Rewarding
The Bokkeveld and Witzenberg valleys set the stage for three days of scorching sun, relentless climbs, and descents that will either have you grinning ear-to-ear or questioning your life choices. The terrain is nothing short of spectacular – rocky singletracks, flowing trails through vineyards, and iconic climbs like the Merino Monster, a beast that makes or breaks riders.
But here’s the thing – it’s tough, sure, but it’s also rideable, manageable, and incredibly rewarding for amateur riders who love a challenge. Whether you’re pushing for a podium or just aiming to survive each stage with your dignity intact, the trails offer something for everyone. And with the pro women setting the pace, there’s an undeniable energy in the air that makes you want to push just that little bit harder.
Hospitality That Feels Like a Luxury Holiday (Sort Of)
Let’s talk about race village vibes. If you’re picturing a dusty tent and a basic pasta meal, think again. The Tankwa Trek is known for top-tier hospitality, from the incredible food (because let’s be real, post-ride meals are everything) to comfortable race accommodation and a setup that feels more like a luxury getaway than a sufferfest.
And then there’s the post-stage atmosphere – sunset beers, war stories from the day’s ride, and a real sense of community. It’s the kind of event where you bond with your fellow riders over shared struggles, surprise yourself with what your body can endure, and leave with new friendships forged in the heat and dust of the Karoo.
Why Every Female Rider Should Take on the Tankwa Trek
Women’s mountain biking is growing, and races like the Tankwa Trek are proof that we belong in this space just as much as the guys. Whether you’re racing for a result, looking for a proper challenge, or simply wanting to tick off an iconic event on your MTB bucket list, this race is one for the books.
So, if you’re still on the fence, take this as your sign to start training, grab a riding buddy, and say yes to an adventure that will test you, thrill you, and leave you wanting more.
See you at the start line – and at the bar after stage three!
The 2025 Elite Women’s Field: A Battle for the Ages
The 2025 Tankwa Trek promises a stacked elite women’s field, headlined by none other than Kate Courtney and Candice Lill’s She Sends squad. South Africa’s own Lill, a familiar face at this event, is back to defend her title alongside Courtney, bringing serious firepower to the start line.
The duo will face fierce competition from a mix of seasoned riders and fresh pairings, including Tyler Jacobs and Sara Cortinovis (GHOST-LIV Racing), Greta Seiwald and Martina Berta (Decathlon Ford and Origine Racing Division, racing as Spaghetti M&G), and the ever-consistent Sarah Hill and Vera Looser (Efficient Infiniti Insure). Another exciting team to watch is Bianca Haw and Danielle Strydom, making their debut for Safari Essence Titan Racing.
The international field doesn’t stop there. Andrea Schofmann and Felicitas Geiger (GMG Ladies) bring cross-country prowess to the mix, while local rising stars Lianke Fourie and Bianca Botha (Fast and Fabulous) are out to prove themselves against the best. The Kolisi/Songo Foundation’s Cherise Willeit and Ila Stow will also be strong contenders, battling it out against a competitive group of top amateur teams.
With such a dynamic mix of talent, experience, and fresh partnerships, the 2025 Tankwa Trek women’s race is set to be one of the most exciting yet. Who will rise to the occasion and set the tone for the season ahead? There’s only one way to find out – by watching it all unfold on the trails of the Koue Bokkeveld!
