What will it take for you to go from good to great? Why can’t you do that stage race? Why can’t you be on the podium? And this applies to other aspects of your life as well. Why can’t I get that job, man of my dreams? Why can’t I lose 10kgs?
Try this 7 S strategy to go from good to great! STRENGTHEN YOUR STRENGTHS
We live in a world that says we should always be working on our weaknesses but this just encourages mediocrity. For example: if you are not great at climbing, you must devote your time and training to climbing. But what if you spent more time working on your strengths. So instead of being a good technical rider, you become a FANTASTIC technical rider. If you put your time & energy into the things that you are good at and you are passionate about, the gains will be exponential! Obviously you cannot only focus on your strengths, you also need to MANAGE your weaknesses.
SET GOALS
We all know we need to set goals. We know the acronym: they should be Specific Measurable Attainable Results orientated Time bound
But how many of us do this with regard to our sport, let alone our lives in general? We have to have a goal in order to know what direction to go in. The second part of setting a goal is to have a plan on how to get there. Tied into that is to ask for help. Perhaps get a coach, a new training plan or enter a race you want to complete. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE
Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you. Spend the most time with them and it will change your life! Make sure these people buy into you and your plans and are invested in your goals and vision. STAY IN THE MOMENT
There is a certain amount of power in giving the present moment your full attention. Do “right now” as well as you can and “just now” will take care of itself. It also helps if you focus less on stresses of the future and see the beauty of right now, whether it’s the trail and scenery around you or a conversation with another person. The world is so full of distractions and we choose to focus on these things rather than live in the moment. One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your undivided attention, and that includes yourself. SURRENDER THE THINGS YOU CANNOT CONTROL
At the start line of any race you will hear people talk about the hills, the weather, the competition etc. There are things we worry about and things we can actually control. Rather focus on the things that you can control. Your training, your preparation including your bike, your packing, your nutrition and lastly your mind set. This is one of the greatest things to learn for stress relief and confidence going into a race or competition. SELF MAINTENANCE
As women we are particularly hard on ourselves. Our work/life balance is always being juggled and we try hard to keep everything in check. When is good, good enough? Self-maintenance refers to taking care of ourselves - physically, mentally & spiritually…whatever that means for you. “Be careful what you say to yourself because you are listening” We never speak to a single other person as much as we speak to ourselves. Make sure it’s positive. So, WHY NOT ME?
Sometimes it’s easier for us to ask questions like, “What if this happens or what if that happens. What if I fail?” But what if you asked “Why not me?” You deserve more than you believe and you are capable of more than you imagine! So get going and take some action. The first step is right in front of you…
